January 21, 2020 The Room 11 kids enjoyed their first lesson on Monday. There were lots of smiles! Some of us thought ice skating was just like inline skating so it was easy to learn. Others had never skated on ice before so it was a new experience. Regardless, there were lots of smiles on our faces! We skate again tomorrow morning (Wednesday). Mrs. Nevelos and the Room 11 Kids Room 11 students have been studying the strategies and tactics used by advertisers in toy commercials. After watching many (many!) commercials, we have found that almost all toy advertisers use these five strategies: 1. Happy child actors 2. Loud rock music for "boy" toys and gentle "twinkly" music for "girl" toys 3. Lighting and sound effects 4. Cool backgrounds 5. Small print ("Batteries not included," "Each sold separately.") Advertisers also persuade us to buy their products by using descriptive language (adjectives) so we did this as well as we wrote the scripts for our commercials. Due to some technical difficulties and time constraints, we decided to use the iMovie trailer feature, and they are looking great! We should be done by the end of this week. Mrs. Nevelos and the Room 11 Kids Room 11 students are looking forward to going to Ernie Starr arena for skating lessons.
We go on January 20, 22, 27 and 29th. We will leave Skene at 8:50, take lessons from 9:30 to 10:00, and arrive back to school around 10:45. We are walking to the arena so students MUST dress for the weather. Students should wear several warm layers, toques, mitts, boots, and snow pants are also recommended. The arena is chilly as well. Mrs. Nevelos G.W. Skene's Family Dance will be on Thursday, December 12, from 5:30 - 7:00pm.
Admission is $2 per family. Students MUST be accompanied by an adult for the night. Come join the fun! Mrs. Nevelos Today we looked at our crystals and one of them formed with long crystals. Also, we compared the Borax crystals to the Epsom crystals. Some crystals sat at the bottom of the cup. They were very wet and could move if we shook the cup.
Today two of our three groups performed their Readers' Theatre to the class. They went very well! It was obvious how much the students have grown as performers. Students were assessed on their voice volume, tone and clarity as well as their use of gestures that fit their characters' words. After many rehearsals and feedback loops, each student set a goal to become a better performer. Today, all of that practice and goal-reaching was evident and the performances were very entertaining. Well done, Room 11! Mrs. Nevelos and the Room 11 Kids Parent - teacher conferences are this week. Please book a time for either Thursday, November 21 from 3:00 - 7:00pm or Friday, November 22 from 8:00 - 12:00pm.

In Music, we practiced rhythms. First, we formed a circle and sang a song called Up the Ladder, Down the Ladder. Next, we played Pass the Beat Around the Room. When we played the second game, we stomped our feet in place of the word "beat." In lit block, we practiced our readers' theatres with our groups. In Social, we wrote about the question "How does where you live affect how you live?" We said if you live in the desert, it would be hot and this would affect the activities you did, and if you lived in a rainy place you might spend more time inside. In Math, we learning about decimals and tenths. A tenth could look like a pizza cut into ten equal pieces and someone has taken one out. We can name and write fractions and decimals. We had math twice today, once at 10:20 and 13:20 in the 24 hour clock. In Mindfulness, Miss Deighton told us to close our eyes and imagine how we feel in different situations. We shared afterwards. Someone said they felt normal when they got a complement on their work and someone else said they would feel proud if they got a reward for your work. Mindfulness is not only for if you are upset. You can use it to be mindful about how you feel. At recess, we played Gaga Ball "Roland's Way." That means we played fairly so when we got hit with the ball we jumped out right away (with a smile on our face!) Mrs. Nevelos and the Room 11 kids Math - decimals and fractions
