Class cancellations are unusual and challenging events. During this short period before spring break, we encourage families to maintain a balanced and consistent routine for children; including regular sleeping and eating times, breaks for activity and outdoor time, and healthy boundaries on screen time. After spring break, additional learning resources and activities will be shared to support students in learning. Children are naturally curious learners and there are opportunities at home to engage their learning. We have created a webpage (below) that offers a variety of educational ideas to support literacy, numeracy and wellness at home for this week. The resources are meant as suggestions only. You may choose to use the links and activities as needed over the next few days as more long-term educational programming is considered. https://cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/default.aspx March 17, 2020
Good Afternoon G.W. Skene Families, We are inviting students to come into the school on Thursday March 19th 2020 between 9:00AM – 1:00PM, to collect their belongings. Please see schedule below for times. If you are unable to attend at the assigned time, please contact the office to arrange an alternative. Belongings will be held at the school until further notice. Teachers will be working around the school during this time but will not be available for conversation. We ask that students and parents maintain and respect social distancing by not engaging with staff. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] We would ask that students only come to the school if they have essential, personal items to pick up. School supplies such as books, pencils and scissors will remain at the school. To avoid multiple trips to the school, if you have more than one child at this school, please come at one time altogether. If you have other children attending James Short Memorial, we have done our best to coordinate with their administration to prevent you from taking too many trips from home to school. Please ensure that only the student is entering the school unless they need adult support. We will ask that students enter through the main doors and go straight to the gym where their items will be waiting for them. We would ask that you encourage your child to look at the items from the lost and found that we will have laid out for them. Parents please wait outside for your child if they do not need support (this will support social distancing and avoid larger group gatherings). 9:00am –9:30am – SKILL, Mr. Lyons 9:30am – 10:30am – Mrs. Tonkin and Mrs. Brierley 10:30am – 11:00am –Ms. Chung and Mrs. Sanghera 11:00am – 11:30pm– Mr. McDermid and Mrs. Thoms/Murphy 11:30pm – 12:00pm – Mrs. Nevelos and Mr. Trinh Please return any items belonging to the school, e.g. library books, home reading books etc. and place them into the labelled bin inside the main entrance doors. Alien Inline Skating We are excited for students to skate this week. Here are some helpful tips:
That's a good question!
The Bank of Canada is looking for Canadians' thoughts about who should be featured on the next $5 bill. Five people were chosen from the list of nominees and each Room 11 student researched one of them to find out what his / her greatest achievement was. The nominees were John Diefenbaker, Chief Crowfoot, Nellie McClung, Joseph Tyrrell and Chanie Wenjack. Next, each group presented their findings and then we took a vote. The winner was Nellie McClung. Most of us voted for Nellie because she fought for women's right to vote, fought for women's property rights and wanted women's rights to be more equal to men's. We went on the Bank of Canada website and submitted our nomination. According to the website, the new $5 bill should be in circulation in the next few years. Mrs. Nevelos Our Family Skate Night is on Feb. 27.
Grade 3 students and their families are welcome to skate from 5:30 - 6:30pm and grades 4 and 5 students from 6:30 - 7:30pm. Also, the time of our Pink Shirt Day assembly has been changed. It is this Friday from 11:00 - 11:30am. Please join us! Mrs. Nevelos Today in Science, we learned how to read and draw schematic diagrams for electrical circuits. We then got to build them according to our diagrams. We did well!
In Math, we spend 10 minutes each day memorizing our times tables. We are practicing using a mental math strategy for multiplying two by one-digit numbers and a multiplication strategy for two by two-digit numbers. In Language Arts, we do Word Work several times each week to help us recognize spelling patterns in words we do not know how to spell. Everyone has different words and we have to sort them into different categories according to their patterns. This work should help us become better spellers (and it's kind of fun too!). In Social Studies, we have learned about early Canadian history. Now, each of us is going to design Canada's first dollar bill. We had to decide three things: Who will be on our bill and why we chose this person; images that show this person's contributions to Canada, and; the denomination of our bill. Right now, we are learning how to draw faces so we can do a good job of drawing our person! Mrs. Nevelos and the Room 11 Kids What went well:
Math: We are spending 10 minutes several times a week learning our times tables. This is a great thing to do at home too! We are also learning how to use mental math to multiply 2-digit numbers by 1 digit numbers such as 24 x 6. LA - We are writing stories. We just learned five ways to write an entertaining beginning and students are enjoying experimenting with them. Social - We have learned about the competition between the French and the British to claim land in North America. We also learned about the coureurs des bois and voyageurs and the fur trade. Science - We have been building circuits using wires, batteries, bulbs and motors. We can draw them on paper using symbols like electricians do and then build them . There is no school on Feb. 13 and 14. Mrs. Nevelos |
